The Unwritten / Privacy information

Your game.
Your information.

What the current development version of The Unwritten processes, and the choices you have. Updated .

Who is responsible?

ELM-HQ Ltd operates the ELM game services described here. For privacy questions and requests, email contact@elm-hq.com. For technical help, use this game's support page. This notice covers the development game and its ELM HQ game pages; it does not describe every feature planned for a future release.

Your story and account

The game keeps story state and progress for the experience you choose. Optional ELM sign-in links supported cloud saves and preferences to that account. Cloud saves can include the narrative state and relevant story content needed to resume. Local saves remain on the device until removed through the available controls or device storage.

Online direction and voices

When online direction is enabled, game events, current story context and the action you submit are sent to the game-specific ELM director. This can include free-text actions, so do not include private or sensitive real-world information. The director's response and available generated voice files are returned to the game. This route is separate from private ELM chats, general Eliza memories, wallets and health data.

Optional usage statistics

Participating builds can send structured session, play-time and fixed-choice statistics using random installation/session references. The shared statistics collector is separate from account saves and does not use those events as purchase evidence. Installation/session references are pruned after 30 days of inactivity, retry hashes after eight days, and aggregate daily/hourly counters after 90 days. Narrative requests and cloud saves are separate from this statistics stream.

Retention and controls

Account-linked cloud progress is kept to provide continuity until erased or account removal is processed, subject to security and legal requirements. Turn off online direction or optional statistics to stop new submissions through those features; this does not erase data already sent. Signing out is not an account-deletion request. Use available usage-removal/account controls or contact ELM HQ for access, correction or deletion.

Development boundaries

This information covers the current development prototype. iOS packaging and public release are not complete, and prototype voice assets are not a promise of the voices in a released version. New permissions or processing must be explained before activation, rather than inferred from planned features.

Why we use information.

Game and account processing provides the features you request. Security, fraud prevention, support and proportionate reliability work serve our legitimate interests, balanced against your rights. Optional processing that requires consent depends on your choice; you can withdraw it for future collection. Legal obligations may require some records to be kept.

Service providers and this website.

Information is processed by the ELM components and providers necessary for hosting, storage, authentication, security and delivering the selected features. AI game requests are processed by our game-specific services; they are not private end-to-end encrypted messages between two people. Support messages and attachments are sent to ELM HQ. Website delivery and security systems can process network information, page requests and technical visit records. These pages use the site's existing technical/visitor systems; this update does not add an advertising pixel.

Support and security information is retained according to the time needed to resolve issues, protect services and meet legal obligations. Backups may persist until their normal replacement rather than disappearing immediately when live data is removed. If processing occurs outside the UK, applicable transfer safeguards are required.

Your rights and requests.

Depending on the processing and applicable law, you can request access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability; object to processing based on legitimate interests; and withdraw consent where it is used. To make a request, contact ELM HQ and identify the game. We may need to verify account ownership without asking for your password. Uninstalling, signing out or withdrawing a permission does not by itself erase server records.

You can also raise concerns with the UK Information Commissioner's Office. This notice will be updated when material processing changes are introduced.
